Once the book was completed, the class discussion evolved into the teacher explaining to her first graders how a boy can transition to a girl and how a girl can transition to a boy. In response to a student’s question the conversation continued and included the teacher explaining: that a women’s breasts can be removed or “wrapped” to make them less noticeable that you can take medicine to help transition to another gender that she has a friend that was a girl once but realized she was uncomfortable being a girl so her friend decided to become a boy; this story continued about how her friend married another girl and elaborated on details such as what they wore to the wedding These topics are not part of 1st grade curriculum and it is not the teacher’s role or right to present them to 6 and 7 year-olds. The counselor would explain that we love and accept everyone for exactly who they are, and that while it may take some practice to get used to calling this child by the new name and pronouns, “we are asking you to work hard to do that” Parents were given less than 24 hours of notice of this very sensitive and controversial information & expectation that their children would be navigating.
