KSD Makes It Worse: The Sora Saga Continues

Key Takeaways from this Post:

*KSD has admitted that students (elementary through high school) are exposed to sexually explicit content through their school resources.

*KSD has failed to implement promised fixes by January 2026, and instead has made things more confusing for parents & students.

*Parents have been misled by conflicting KSD communications that claim safeguards exist when they do not.

*Even if the safeguards were in place, students would still be exposed to sexually explicit content by KSD’s school resources.

Important Details & Context:

The Kirkwood School District has finally admitted that it has been providing sexually explicit materials to kids through their school resources for years. And in December 2025 they promised parents that they would remedy it by second semester (January 2026). But as of February 2026, they have actually made it WORSE.

KSD’s recent communication to families about the Sora reading app (provided to all KSD students on their school devices) makes contradictory assertions, and the remedy they’ve suggested (albeit a weak one) has not been put in place despite assurance to parents that it would be by now. Rather than adequately and responsibly alerting parents about sexually explicit content, KSD has given them a false impression that it has been taken care of.

This continued mishandling by KSD leadership of such a simple and important issue is appalling. Here are a few pieces of information to help you understand this mess:

This February 5, 2026 Press Release explains the current situation and includes a link to the most recent Demand Letter that was sent to KSD by Thomas More Society on February 4, 2026. This SAMPLE DOCUMENT shows some of the content KSD provides to children even if the remedy they had promised had taken effect (this sample document is age-restricted for safety despite all of the material coming from minors’ school resources).

Finally, this OVERVIEW of a couple of KSD’s recent communications explains some of the issues and how KSD has made matters WORSE for parents while putting kids at more risk.

Please be aware of this situation and help insist that KSD leaders follow the LAW and protect our kids. Their continued recklessness is putting kids and our community’s resources at risk.

You can direct your concern and questions to Superintendent Roumpos (kenneth.roumpos@kirkwoodschools.org), Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction Liz Grana (liz.grana@kirkwoodschools.org) and the Board members (addresses available here). Or your help could be as simple as an email to the school librarian stating, “I’m confused by what is going on with my kid’s Sora access. Please explain.”

KSD leaders have all been quite aware of this ongoing issue and have no excuse for not protecting children and honoring parents’ rights by now. If you learn anything or gain any insight, please share with us at contact@kfei.org.

(If this all seems confusing, that’s because it is! But it does not need to be.)
